Brecon Beacons Photography Holiday October 2010

Nick Jenkins, has this afternoon, arranged a photography week in the Brecon Beacons, to be based at the superb Gliffaes Country House Hotel, near Crickhowell, right in the Beacons National Park surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Usk Valley.  The secluded hotel grounds alone offer hours of great photography, and run right down to the beautiful River Usk! Nick is fortunate in knowing the family who run Gliffaes and we can be absolutely assured of excellent hospitality!

Details are as follows:

Cost - £580 per person, from Monday afternoon (around 4pm) to Friday afternoon (around 4pm). This includes full accommodation (Dinner, B&B and packed lunch and all my time/tuition etc) but does NOT include travel insurance, drinks, and sundries.

Dates – Monday 4th October from about 4pm onwards to Friday 8th October, finishing around 4pm.

Level of Experience – all levels catered for

Walking – there will be some walking on this break to see the best of the landscapes. It will not be severe and we won’t be yomping over dale and fell. But comfy walking boots are strongly advised.

The holiday offers three full days and about ¾ of a day with the camera. Evenings will be taken up reviewing what we have done during the day, with a room available to us. Nick will bring a digital projector and screen etc, but you would be well advised to bring laptops etc to check your own pics too.

He needs to know by end March if you wish to join him. The Gliffaes is a busy Country Hotel and the owner won’t hold the rooms for me for too long. This is going to be advertised nationally and, given the beauty of this area and the popularity of Gliffaes, it can reasonably be anticipated that bookings will be brisk. On receipt of your details Nick will then arrange booking etc with Gliffaes and send/request further details.

Nick aims to keep the number to around 8 so as to be able to help you all as much as you require.

NB: If you are unable to make this one, please note that Nick has pencilled in w/c Mon 11th April 2011 for an Easter Break at Gliffaes as well. Expressions of interest for this are also very welcome.

    Nick Jenkins Outdoor Photography

Nick Jenkins is planning to run a one day photography workshop on 24th April 2010 – Brecon Beacons in Spring. This will replace the ‘snowed out’ day earlier this year!

Cost per attendee for the day will be £50.00 or as stated above (with a £10 non-refundable deposit payable in advance) and you will need to provide your own transport to and from site and lunch. There will be a hot drink stop en route. Numbers will be limited to eight per workshop and both digital and film photographers (SLR or Compact) are welcome. The day will start around 9.15am and end around 5.00pm. All workshops will be on either a Saturday or a Sunday with the emphasis being on how to take great shots in inspiring locations.

These workshops are aimed at both beginners and more advanced photographers and plenty of time will be devoted to each individual to ensure you get the very best out of the day and leave with some memorable pictures.

Picture call: THE RIDDLE OF THE SANDS

    Minimum pixel dimensions: 3000 X 2000
    Landscape format (or
    square, or portrait); B&W
    Deadline: Friday February 26th 2010; 12:00 GMT

To submit images to Picture Calls in fotoLibra, simply click on the Picture Call megaphone icon below a thumbnail in your Collections, and select the relevant Riddle of the Sands picture call from the drop-down menu which appears. Pictures must be marked as Rights Managed, and should not be sent direct to me.

The Riddle of the Sands by Erskine Childers, first published in 1903, is probably the best known of all sailing novels and was described by Ken Follett as “the first modern thriller”. fotoLibra’s Gwyn Headley did the publicity for the film starring Michael York, Simon McCorkindale and Jenny Agutter.

A new edition of the book is being published this summer and we have been asked to provide black and white photographs of the locations described. Basically these are the Friesian Islands off the north coast of Germany and the Netherlands, so we want photographs of the coastlines and inlets of:

    • Juist
    • Norderney
    • Memmert
    • Borkum
    • Insel Neuwerk
    • Cuxhaven

If you have 1903 era photographs of the locations, that would be a tremendous bonus.
